When did you know that you wanted to be an optometrist
I’ve always been fascinated with the mechanics of the eye and brain and realized my true passion for the pathophysiology of the eyes studying ocular disease and neuroanatomy. Furthermore, I have always had a love of learning, and developments in vision care mean that the role of an optometrist is constantly expanding, bringing with it intriguing opportunities to expand our knowledge base, and with it better patient care.
Favorite part of being an optometrist
As the most dominant of our senses, our eyesight has the greatest impact on our perception of the world.Oftentimes, an optometrist is the first person to identify a condition in its early stages, and when a patient’s vision is compromised by a disease or condition, I greatly enjoy the investigative nature of my profession to help find a solution. It is through relationship building with my patients that I’m able to accomplish that, and I genuinely enjoy getting to know each of them and seeing them year after year.
I’m very lucky to have traveled to various European, tropical and South American destinations. However, my favorite place to be is anywhere with my wife, Kristin and our three children, Grant, Luke and Grace.
Favorite concert you’ve been to
I would not be able to pick one; depends on the time of life and circumstances. I really like a bit of everything.
Do you have any pets?
Yes, we have a much-loved family dog named Jessie, and my three kids are constantly bringing home a steady stream of various creatures they find outside.
I was born and raised on a farm in Western Nebraska, and my family still farms there. We mainly grow dryland wheat, beans, and corn. Had I not been an Optometrist, this is where I would be – farming.
